If you are struggling after birth, the end of a planned bonding period does not tell you whether you are medically ready to return. It tells you what was previously scheduled. Those are different things, and a health concern deserves its own conversation.
Contact your healthcare professional and describe what is happening, including how symptoms affect sleep, concentration, daily functioning, or your ability to work. You do not need to diagnose yourself before asking for help.
Use the right leave reason
Bonding is time to care for and connect with a new child. A qualifying mental health condition can involve medical leave or an accommodation process. Under federal FMLA, mental health conditions can qualify when they meet the serious-health-condition requirements and the employee is eligible.
That does not guarantee additional weeks beyond an exhausted leave balance. State programs, disability coverage, employer policies, and accommodation laws may have separate rules. Ask for a review of the options rather than assuming a new diagnosis creates an unlimited extension.
Contact the administrator before the current approval ends
Explain that you need information about a possible medical leave or accommodation. Ask which certification is required, who should receive it, and how the employer handles a pending decision near the return date.
Keep the manager’s update limited to what is needed for scheduling. Detailed medical information belongs with the appropriate confidential reviewer. You can say that a medical review is underway without explaining every symptom to your team.
Give the clinician useful work information
Describe the duties and schedule you would return to. Long shifts, safety-sensitive tasks, travel, or high-concentration work may be relevant to the assessment. Ask about restrictions or a gradual return if medically appropriate, rather than focusing only on a number of extra weeks.
The clinician documents medical needs; the employer or program evaluates the applicable leave and benefit rules. Both parts need to be completed, and one approval does not automatically update the other.
Reduce what you are carrying
Ask a trusted person to help organize deadlines, meals, transportation, or childcare while you pursue care. Practical help is not a substitute for treatment, but it can make getting to appointments and completing forms more possible.
If symptoms are urgent or you feel unsafe, seek immediate medical help rather than waiting for a benefits decision. The paperwork can follow the care.
You do not have to argue that you deserve support by comparing yourself with another parent. The next useful step is a specific clinical conversation and an accurate review of your leave options. Your original calendar is allowed to be reconsidered.
