What could you be paid?

The maximum weekly benefit in 2026 is $1,230.39. A tiered earnings formula determines the actual payment; the cap is not a promised weekly amount.

Who may qualify?

Eligibility uses covered earnings and a financial test rather than simply time in the current job. Some self-employed people can elect coverage. Municipal and other excluded employment needs separate review.

What protects your job?

PFML provides restoration and anti-retaliation rights for qualifying leave, with statutory exceptions. Confirm health-insurance continuation and your contribution payment arrangement with HR.

Recovery leave and bonding

Up to 20 weeks of your own medical leave and 12 weeks of family leave, limited to 26 combined weeks per benefit year. A recovery period must qualify medically; it is not automatic extra bonding.

Notice, dates, and deadlines

A seven-day waiting period generally applies, with exceptions including some immediate transitions from pregnancy medical leave to bonding. Ask DFML how your exact sequence will be handled.

How to apply

Apply at paidleave.mass.gov or through an approved private plan. Notify the employer, collect the certification and check benefit-year dates. PTO may supplement PFML only within applicable limits.

Before you choose your dates

Ask for one written timeline showing the source of pay and the protection for each part of your absence. Include prior leave used, any waiting period, employer top-up rules, health-premium payments, and the first scheduled workday after leave. The maximum listed above is not a personal approval.

Your application folder

  • Employer contact, work location, hire date, wage records and schedule.
  • Proof of birth or placement accepted by the program.
  • Medical certification only when the requested leave reason requires it.
  • Proposed dates, any split schedule, and the employer’s notice confirmation.
  • Submitted forms, receipt numbers, decisions, and appeal deadlines.

After approval, check whether continuing certifications or weekly claims are required. Report work, other payments and date changes accurately. A state payment approval does not automatically update the employer’s absence record.
