What could you be paid?

No payment available under the new statewide program in 2026. Future benefit amounts and implementation instructions should be confirmed with VEC as regulations develop.

Who may qualify?

The new statewide insurance program is in implementation. Do not assume a future claim is approved based on today’s employment alone. Public employees and private employer plans may have existing benefits.

What protects your job?

Future program protections do not substitute for current FMLA or existing employer obligations. Request today’s protection rules from your employer.

Recovery leave and bonding

For a 2026 birth, any paid medical recovery generally depends on an existing disability or employer plan. The newly enacted insurance program has not started paying.

Notice, dates, and deadlines

VEC states benefits begin December 1, 2028. Mark the date as a future rollout, not as leave currently available to a new parent.

How to apply

Follow VEC’s PFML implementation page. For leave now, contact the employer’s benefits administrator and any current insurer.

Before you choose your dates

Ask for one written timeline showing the source of pay and the protection for each part of your absence. Include prior leave used, any waiting period, employer top-up rules, health-premium payments, and the first scheduled workday after leave. The maximum listed above is not a personal approval.

Your application folder

  • Employer contact, work location, hire date, wage records and schedule.
  • Proof of birth or placement accepted by the program.
  • Medical certification only when the requested leave reason requires it.
  • Proposed dates, any split schedule, and the employer’s notice confirmation.
  • Submitted forms, receipt numbers, decisions, and appeal deadlines.

After approval, check whether continuing certifications or weekly claims are required. Report work, other payments and date changes accurately. A state payment approval does not automatically update the employer’s absence record.
